Excavating in a residential garden where mature trees and established structures are already in place requires working around what’s already there. We were brought in to excavate soil on a suburban property while keeping the existing trees and timber features in their place.

The situation
The site was a residential garden with mature trees and timber structures already established across the property. The presence of these features meant the excavation work had to be planned around root systems and existing built elements, with the work area containing a parked car and modern buildings nearby.
The suburban setting is typical of Auckland residential properties where gardens have evolved over time and now contain a mix of mature plantings and structures. The layout meant we needed to work within the constraints of what was already there on the land.
What we did
We brought in a mini digger to handle the excavation work in the garden. The operator worked around the tree roots and timber structures, moving soil as required while keeping the existing features in place.
The mini digger’s size made it suitable for working in a residential garden setting where space and existing plantings needed to be respected. The operator excavated soil in the areas that needed it, managing the machine’s position and movement to work around the mature trees and timber elements on the property.

The result
The excavation was completed with the mature trees and timber structures left intact. The garden was left ready for the next stage of work, whether that was landscaping, drainage installation, or preparation for new planting.
The site was cleared of the excavated material, leaving a level working area. The established character of the garden was preserved while the necessary earthwork had been completed.
